Business Unit Sortex & Rice.

Expert in product and processes

Bühler has long been the global leader in the development and supply of solutions for the food processing industry. The Sortex & Rice business unit is proud to maintain and build on that reputation for excellence. Its reputation for excellence is built on two main pillars:
  • An understanding and focus on the specific industries involved and the processes required by processors to deliver safe, clean, profitable output to their customers.
  • A commitment to the continual development of the technologies required to meet those demands, in a world which continues to demand ever more from those processors.

Rice & Pulses
In the rice and pulses sectors, Bühler experience and expertise stands behind a range of machines – and entire plants – to help customers make the most of their raw materials and to send out the quality of product their customers want and demand.

Bühler rice processing systems have throughput capacities ranging from 2 to 120 metric tons per hour – at all stages, ensuring top quality rice and maximum product uields. the proportion of broken grains in processing is minimized, as well as the cleaning requirements, thanks to an efficient cleaning concept.

Commercial-scale processing includes a large number of individual operations, ranging from reception and drying to storage, cleaning, hulling, polishing, and grading and packaging. In Bühler plants, each of these operations has been fine-tuned to minimize product breakage and thus minimize the yield of full rice. But each stage of this process has been considered carefully – to minimize the proportion of broken grains, for example, and to minimize downtime by the development of efficient cleaning procedures.

Additional upgrading processes, such as grinding broken rice grains into high-grade rice flour to stabilizing rice polishing in order to obtain high quality vegetable oils, assist our customers to achieve commercial success.

Sorting
Meanwhile, the SORTEX range of sorters, while forming an important function in the rice and pulses sectors, offers sorting solutions to a vast range of other commodities, including nuts, grains, dry fruit, spices, and fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables. And, in a world keen to make the most of exciting resources, SORTEX sorters make their contribution to the plastics industries – sorting recycled materials.

Bühler’s Sortex product portfolio includes optical sorters capable of detecting and removing product particles with colour, shape and size defects as well as foreign matter contained in foods and other commodities. The customer demands speedy, efficient, reliable removal of unwanted elements of their product flow, and their customers demand clean, safe, attractive products.

SORTEX sorters can detect and remove gross and subtle product defects by colour – even colours the human eye cannot see. They can detect and remove undesirable elements of a product by their shape or size – for example, removing cuts and stems from otherwise good product. And they can remove foreign material from the product stream – whether from the farmer’s field, or introduced into the product stream in the factory.

These sorting systems help our customers satisfy the rigorous quality requirements of their own consumers. They protect the reputation of their brands and thus enable them to achieve a significant competitive edge in their markets.
