SSP for recycled PET pellets.

Solid-state polycondensation (SSP) processing of PET pellets during recycling replicates the synthesis process of virgin polymers, which ensures the high quality of bottle preforms when using recycled PET.

Recycled PET pellets are used for repeat bottle manufacturing. PET recycled using Buhler technology has been proven to meet food safety norms for 100% use in bottle preforms. Typical percentages are 10-50% in bottles, depending on the product types and policies of bottlers and brand owners.

Key Features

Product quality
  • Cleanness comparable with virgin PET.
  • Minimal acetaldehyde content (less than in virgin PET).

Process Description

SSP for the PET recycling process meets the same basic requirements as virgin polymers: increase of molecular weight (IV) and removal of organic by-products. However with recycled material the increase of IV is less (due to IV degradation in previous PET heating processes), and organic by-products are not caused by side reactions during PET synthesis, but are mostly migrated substances from consumer usage.
