Six years ago, I started as Administrator of the African Milling School (AMS) in Nairobi, Kenya, and in a nutshell, I’ve never had a boring day since. Every morning, I wake up highly motivated to take the new challenges of the day. A large responsibility of my work is to manage our training and event calendars, that means making sure new groups of students have a seamless entry into our trainings. I love working at the African Milling School, because I get to meet a large diversity of people, and more importantly, I get to see them and myself grow and flourish. Every day is filled with new opportunities and lessons – something I love about the Bühler work culture. This is also what I look forward to most during my morning commute.
Diversity and inclusion are key to me, so meeting new people plays into that constantly. When I think about a Bühler employee I’d like to have coffee with, Irene Mark-Eisenring, Head of Human Resources, comes to mind. I think it would be quite insightful to hear how she manages leadership on a company-wide scale, plus I’d love to tap into the femme power of our Executive Board.
My passion for diversity and inclusion is reflected again in the teams I manage; fostering creativity and problem solving, while always being open to growth and individuality. From day to day, I learn more about the craft of milling. As an administrator, with basic knowledge of milling, and Bühler as a company, I can act as intermediary for sales, advising clients on the single machine offerings, and referring them to my specialized colleagues where needed. I consider myself to be quite lucky, and in many ways, it feels more like I’m part of a family than a team of colleagues.
Outside of work I enjoy traveling, seeing new things, and meeting new people. I also have an affinity for cooking, to which I count meat dishes as favorites. I also have two wonderful girls, with whom I love bonding with over physical, outdoor activity. It really isn’t hard to be enamored by both the natural beauty of Kenyia, and my family.
I like traveling in all directions of the compass, because there is always something new to explore, and new people to meet.
Carolyne Kyalo,
AMS Administrator
Working at AMS wasn’t always easy. I remember having great challenges when first starting off. At first, it was a lot of establishing what had to be done, both marketing and in terms of our course offering. Over the years, AMS has gained increased attention, which now makes me think that the early struggles were worth it. While the past 6 years have been tough with 2020 being exceptionally difficult due to the Corona Virus pandemic, they have also been rewarding, and much as I like to take up new challenges, I feel this is not the ideal time to leave my team or position.
Currently, I am excited to be working on e-learning offerings for the school, which will be an immense help in pandemic times, and will be a valuable step towards making our courses digital. I’m also excited for the advancements of innovative and sustainable practices which we plan to pass on to our trainees. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing our former students, developing well as professionals in the industry.
